I have an apology to make to everybody I have recommended Carbonite to! I did enjoy the month of free service that I was given each time one of you signed up. (Although Carbonite ditched the referral plan, I continued to recommend Carbonite to people to protect their data!). Back when I started my subscriptions in April 2016 the service was called Personal Basic. (They renamed it Carbonite Safe Basic back in 2018.)
has had this really awesome data restoration feature called Carbonite Courier Recovery. It is a service that you can pay extra for when you really need your data back. They put it on a hard drive and send it to you. Sounds awesome doesn’t it?
It appears that they now have a policy that their Carbonite Courier Recovery service is not available to you (or me). (Although it sure looks like it is!)
I am not too sure why.
Support initally indicated that its illegal to ship drives across the border because they are “encrypted”. Obviously, this is not true. (Unless they are using some new form of encryption classed as some new form of munition that classes Canada as a non-ally! 🙂 ) They later verified that this was a lie as I can’t get it shipped to my techie friend in Texas to get my data either.
Nor can you get your data backup shipped to any USA address as they cancel the request for non-USA residents. Not your hotel, not your friend, and not your USA vacation property.
I can not envision any valid reason that this service (that I have been paying for for over 5 years on two seperate PCs) is not available to me.
Yes, you can still download your data from Carbonite (I guess they don’t encrypt it as it crosses the border!). They actually have 3 ways to do this. The fastest way is via the app and there are two slower ways via a web browser. A restoration of 450GB the fast way on my >1GB/s internet connection has been running for 5 days now. It looks like it will definitely probably finish in about 20 days or so. Obviously we can see why they need the courier recovery service with such a slow restoration.
Clicking on HOW CAN I MAKE THIS FASTER has some great advice, including the helpful IT ALSO HELPS IF YOU LEAVE YOUR PC ON. Doh! I never thought of that, but makes sense!
Carbonite was also kind enough to offer to refund me my last payment (not all 5 years unfortunately). How kind. Especially because this would have immediately cancelled my subscription! Sorry, I think I need to hold on to it for at least 20 more days to get my data back!
I have to rescind my Carbonite recommendation. At least for anyone not living in the USA. Its a great backup service, but sometimes you need a recovery service!
I will find a replacement and let you all know when I do. Hey BackBlaze has a referral program! cool! Backblaze’s Restore By Mail feature costs $189 if you want your files sent to you on a hard drive that’s capable of storing up to 8 TB of data, or $99 for a 256 GB flash drive. You can keep the drive for yourself or you can return it within 30 days for a full refund, essentially making this service free, which is not something a lot of services offer. (Tell me about it!) I’ll try it and report back here.
