“Microsoft” Phone Scam

CBC TV news report on a scam that I know a partial victim of (It was NOT me! lol). Very convincing.

You get a call from “Microsoft” telling you that your internet service provider has noticed that your computer maybe infected with a virus. Or it is slow. Or something is wrong with it.

Except Microsoft does not call people to tell them things like this.

They get you to pull up your Windows Event Viewer to see if you have any “errors” indicated. Event viewer is always full of confusing stuff, so its easy to believe you are having problems. Then you are asked to go to a certain website. The website allows “Microsoft” to take control of your computer and help “fix” it. They spend about half an hour connected to your computer rifling through your hard drive and your files.

Then they try to sell you the fix via credit card. Although the “premium” version of their solution is tempting with the “lifetime” guarantee, don’t buy it!

Tecumseh OPP warned the public about it back in February.

What should you do if you received the call:
If you installed the remote control software and let them access your computer, your computer needs professional assistance. It is likely they left a backdoor installed that is capturing passwords and allowing them access to everything on your computer.
If you gave them your credit card number for the “helpful” software, report it to your credit card company.Stop the payment and ask them what else you should do.
And either way, consider reporting it to the Canadian antiFraud Center:
